Djifère fishermen and Greenpeace alert on oil exploitation impacts
Fishermen in Djifère, located in the Palmarin commune of Senegal, have raised concerns regarding the environmental and economic impacts of oil and gas exploitation. In collaboration with Greenpeace Africa, members of the Local Council of Artisanal Fishing (CLPA) organized a community advocacy meeting to address these issues.
Representatives from Greenpeace Africa noted that the campaign aims to document the effects of offshore oil production at Sangomar on coastal communities. Key concerns include the disruption of fishing activities, the impact on women involved in processing fishery products, and the acceleration of coastal erosion in the region.
Souleymane Thiaw, coordinator of the CLPA in Djifère, reported that the establishment of security perimeters around oil operations has created significant difficulties for local professionals who previously worked in those waters. Greenpeace Africa plans to compile findings from various coastal sites, including Saint-Louis, Lompoul, and Kayar, to develop an action plan that incorporates community-proposed solutions.
