Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has sparked significant political controversy following dual sets of remarks in the Legislative Assembly. During a discussion on Bengaluru’s rapid urbanization and population growth, Shivakumar claimed that approximately a dozen MLAs who relocated to the city from other districts have married twice. This comment drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, including Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka, who demanded the names of the legislators involved, arguing the remark undermined the dignity of the House.

Simultaneously, Shivakumar has launched a major constitutional challenge against the Election Commission of India (ECI). He accused the commission of acting as a “partner in vote theft” alongside the BJP and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Chief Minister alleged that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being used as a tool for political conspiracy to disenfranchise minority communities.

Shivakumar noted that the SIR process has seen a drastic reduction in registered voters in Karnataka, from 5.54 crore to 4.46 crore. He further urged the President to intervene and dissolve the Election Commission, citing internal dissent among commissioners and a lack of impartiality. These allegations follow claims by former Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson, who alleged that Kumar had previously suggested he contest a Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket.
