DKFZ leads EU-funded AI project to improve prostate cancer treatment

A European research consortium, led by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), has launched the PROMETHEUS project to improve the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer using artificial intelligence. The initiative is supported by approximately 4 million euros in funding from the European Commission.

The project aims to develop an intelligent multi-agent system that integrates diverse data sources, including clinical records, MRI and PET/CT imaging, tissue examinations, and long-term patient histories. By utilizing big data and AI agents, the system seeks to distinguish between aggressive tumors requiring immediate action and those that can be monitored, thereby reducing unnecessary biopsies and interventions.

Running from October 2026 to September 2030, the project involves six leading European institutions and will utilize existing datasets from over 20,000 patients to train and test its models. The goal is to move toward precision oncology through multimodal, explainable clinical decision support that tailors treatment to individual patient needs.
