DLR launches Modularis maritime research platform in Flensburg

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has launched the hull of its new research platform, Modularis, in Flensburg. The 48-meter vessel is designed as a floating laboratory to test maritime technologies under real sea conditions.

Scheduled for completion in 2027, the platform will serve as a testbed for alternative propulsion systems, including hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, and battery power. It will also be used to trial autonomous navigation, sensor technology, and automated systems. To ensure safety during testing, the ship is equipped with three main engines to maintain operation even if experimental components fail.

Following the launch, the vessel will be transported via the Kiel Canal to Bremerhaven for interior outfitting and technical equipment installation at the Lloyd Werft. Once operational, the Modularis will be based in Kiel and is expected to conduct missions in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Mediterranean.
