dm drugstore expands health services with cardiovascular checks

The German drugstore chain dm is expanding its health services to include cardiovascular checks, aiming to launch the new offering within the current calendar year. Sebastian Bayer, dm's Managing Director for Marketing and Procurement, stated that the initiative targets cardiovascular diseases, which are the most common cause of death in Germany. The service will utilize sensor technology in specialized booths to capture vital signs such as heart rhythm and blood pressure without requiring customers to undress.

In addition to cardiovascular checks, dm is scaling up its eye screening services, planning to increase the number of participating locations from eight to 30. This expansion includes testing in both urban centers and rural areas, such as Schleswig-Holstein, where access to ophthalmologists is limited. The company is also working to improve its skin analysis services by facilitating connections to online dermatologists.

These expansions face significant opposition from medical professionals. The Federal Association of Private Practitioners in Cardiology has warned against uncoordinated testing, suggesting such services belong in medical practices. Furthermore, dm is facing legal challenges; the Wettbewerbszentrale has taken the company to court regarding its eye screening services, and medical associations have criticized the expansion of diagnostic services into retail environments.
