Dmitri Shostakovich: Rádio MEC celebrates 120th anniversary of composer's birth

Rádio MEC’s program ‘Caderno de Música’ is hosting a special edition to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century.

Born in Saint Petersburg in 1906, Shostakovich’s life and career were deeply intertwined with the political and cultural shifts of the Soviet Union. His compositions are noted for their complexity, often reflecting the tensions and pressures of living under an authoritarian regime through a blend of irony and emotional depth.

The broadcast features a curated selection of his works, including Symphony No. 1 performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Symphony No. 5 by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, and Jazz Suite No. 2 performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The program also aims to educate listeners on classical music terminology and history.
