Dmitry Muratov claims Putin cannot claim victory in Ukraine

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov, co-founder of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, stated in a BBC interview that Russian President Vladimir Putin can no longer claim victory in the war against Ukraine. Muratov argued that because the conflict has lasted nearly five years and resulted in massive casualties, it can no longer be characterized as a victory.

Muratov noted that while Russia possesses the capability to destroy Ukraine, it cannot conquer it. He also highlighted the severe domestic consequences of the war, including increased political repression. He estimated that at least 1,500 people have been imprisoned in Russia for opposing state policy since the start of the invasion, a figure he claims is three times higher than during the worst days of the KGB era.

The interview also touched upon the suppression of independent media in Russia. Muratov described how Novaya Gazeta has been effectively liquidated through state decrees, with its website blocked and its staff facing extreme pressure. He characterized the current environment as one dominated by silence and fear, despite private dissent.
