DMK Breaks with Congress Bloc in Parliament, Stays in Session on Key Bills

During India's monsoon parliamentary session, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chose not to join the Congress-led opposition walkout on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The party remained in the Rajya Sabha to press the government for answers on the alleged NEET paper leak and the July 20 police crackdown on student protesters.

DMK members also took an independent stance on other legislation. In the Lok Sabha, DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran criticised the government’s exam reforms without directly attacking Home Minister Amit Shah. The party’s MPs A. Raja and Kanimozhi Karunanidhi opposed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, arguing it conflicted with India’s secular values and reflected a Hindutva agenda.

These moves follow the DMK’s exit from the INDIA bloc after the Congress‑TVK alliance and the formation of a Tamil Nadu government, securing separate seating arrangements in Parliament. The party says its actions are issue‑based, not an endorsement of the ruling government.
