Tamil Nadu MPs meet to oppose proposed delimitation exercise
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay convened an all-party consultative meeting on 8 August 2026 in Chennai to discuss the potential impact of the Union government's proposed delimitation exercise. The meeting, held at Kalaivanar Arangam, aimed to build a united front to protect the state's parliamentary representation.
Major regional parties, including the DMK and AIADMK, boycotted the meeting. The DMK characterized the session as "political drama" and an unnecessary exercise, arguing that the government should have prioritized an all-party meeting on the Mekedatu dam issue first. DMK leaders clarified they are not opposed to delimitation in principle but demand a fair process that prevents the reduction of Tamil Nadu's political voice.
The meeting was attended by approximately 19 to 21 MPs from parties including Congress, VCK, CPI, CPM, MDMK, and IUML. These participants were unanimous in their demand to abandon the fresh delimitation exercise and freeze the Lok Sabha strength at its current level of 543 seats. They expressed concern that a population-based redistribution could penalize states like Tamil Nadu that have successfully implemented population control policies. Law Minister R. Nirmal Kumar further demanded that the existing delimitation freeze be extended by another 25 years.
