Dümmer-See serves as a major nature and tourism hub in Lower Saxony

The Dümmer-See, the second-largest inland lake in Lower Saxony, serves as a significant site for both tourism and nature conservation. Spanning 12.5 square kilometers between Diepholz and Damme, the lake is situated between the Stemweder Berge and Dammer Berge.

Due to its shallow average depth of 1.20 meters, the lake is a popular destination for water sports such as surfing and sailing. It also offers family-friendly amenities, including four free sand beaches on the eastern shore and seaside promenades in the holiday locations of Hüde and Lembruch.

Ecologically, the lake is a designated ‘Natura 2000’ protected area and a vital habitat for migratory birds. It supports significant populations of wildlife, including up to 25,000 lapwings and approximately 400 rare snipe, supported by surrounding low moors and reed beds.
