DNA breakthrough revives search for unidentified Echo Point man in New South Wales
Police in the Blue Mountains have announced a new DNA analysis that narrows the likely ancestry of the unidentified man whose body was discovered at Echo Point in Katoomba on 4 June 2004. The forensic results suggest the man was of Latvian or broader Middle‑European descent. Investigators describe him as a Caucasian male over 60 years old, about 178 cm tall, medium‑built, with light‑grey hair, frontal baldness and significant eyesight problems noted on a handwritten slip found with the body.
He was wearing a blue button‑up shirt, red cardigan, cream jacket, blue corduroy trousers, a black belt and brown work boots when he was found. Superintendent John Nelson, commander of the Blue Mountains Police Area Command, has renewed an appeal for anyone with information, especially those who might know of a missing person fitting this description or with Latvian heritage, urging contacts with Crime Stoppers.
