DNB announces cuts to 400 positions citing AI integration

DNB, Norway’s largest bank, has announced plans to cut approximately 400 positions by the end of the year. CEO Kjerstin Braathen stated that the restructuring is driven by the integration of artificial intelligence and digital solutions, noting that AI is already providing significant benefits in areas such as customer data control, technology development, and programming.

The move has sparked significant debate regarding the bank’s long-term strategy. Professor Emeritus Tor W. Andreassen criticized the decision, arguing that a pure cost-cutting approach is not a growth strategy and suggesting that the bank lacks a clear innovation direction. He noted that research, including findings from the Financial Times, suggests companies investing heavily in AI often expand their workforce by reinvesting resources into human capital rather than simply downsizing.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the impact on young professionals. Students and academics have expressed anxiety that the reduction in junior roles may close entry points for new graduates entering the workforce, potentially making it harder to gain essential early-career experience.
