Norway institutions implement bans on AI smart glasses

Several Norwegian institutions have implemented or advised against the use of smart glasses and AI-integrated wearable technology to protect privacy and information security.

DNB, a major Norwegian bank, has introduced an internal ban on AI glasses within all its offices and branches. The bank cited concerns regarding the potential for sensitive customer data, confidential conversations, and business secrets to be recorded or leaked. Communication Director Liselotte Lunde stated the move aims to ensure a safe working environment where employees and customers do not feel they are being filmed without consent.

Similarly, Indre Østfold municipality has established new guidelines prohibiting the use of smart glasses and other body-worn devices equipped with cameras, microphones, or AI functionality during working hours. The municipality intends to protect students, patients, and employees from unauthorized recording and to uphold legal confidentiality requirements while awaiting national guidance.

Additionally, the Church Council (Kirkerådet) has advised employees and volunteers against using AI glasses with recording capabilities while performing duties for the Church of Norway. The trade union Tekna has called for a temporary sales halt on Meta-branded smart glasses while the government's expert group continues its investigation into the matter.
