Dương Bưu’s defiance seen as Cao Cao’s lingering threat in Eastern Han
Dương Bưu, a senior official of the Hoằng Nông Dương clan, is portrayed as the figure whose persistent resistance prevented Cao Cao, the warlord who would later found the state of Cao Wei, from fully eliminating the traditional aristocracy of the Eastern Han dynasty. The era witnessed the decline of the hereditary elite system and the rise of new power blocs, yet the two leading noble families – the Viên clan of Nhữ Nam and the Dương clan – retained dominant positions, each supplying members to the highest ministerial offices known as the “Tam công”.
Cao Cao’s military campaigns, including his decisive victory at the Battle of Quan Độ, succeeded in crushing the Viên house, but his chief concern shifted to Dương Bưu, whose long‑standing service in high‑rank posts (Thái úy, Tư không, Tư đồ, Thượng thư lệnh) made him the embodiment of the lingering legitimacy of the Han central government. According to the accounts, killing Dương Bưu would have meant a direct assault on the remaining authority of the Eastern Han court.
