Dniester River levels drop critically at Novodnestrovsk reservoir
The water level of the Dniester River has dropped significantly, particularly in northern Moldova, reaching a critical level at the Novodnestrovsk reservoir. The water level has fallen to 111 meters, down from a normal level of approximately 122 meters.
Authorities attribute the decline to a prolonged drought and insufficient rainfall in the Ukrainian Carpathians, where much of the river's flow originates. Data from the first 20 days of September indicates that while approximately 60 cubic meters of water per second were being discharged downstream, only about 23 cubic meters per second were entering the reservoir. This imbalance has forced the depletion of accumulated reserves.
Officials warn that the current level is critical as it threatens the safe and stable operation of the hydroelectric infrastructure.
