DNV: LNG bunker vessel fleet may need to double by 2030

A new white paper from DNV indicates that the global LNG bunker vessel fleet may need to more than double by 2030 to keep pace with rising demand. The report estimates that between 165 and 208 bunker vessels could be required globally by the end of the decade.

As the adoption of LNG-powered shipping increases, demand for bunkering capacity is outstripping the current infrastructure. DNV warns that without additional investment across the value chain, fuel supply could become a significant constraint on the transition to alternative fuels in the maritime sector.

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, CEO Maritime at DNV, noted that the maritime energy transition depends on infrastructure, supply chains, and operational capabilities to ensure alternative fuels are available safely and at scale. The report also suggests that converting suitable small-scale LNG carriers into bunker vessels could help accelerate market development.
