DO Mondéjar celebrates 30th anniversary with focus on quality

The Denominación de Origen (DO) Mondéjar is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of commemorative activities, including wine tastings, training sessions, and promotional events. To support the milestone, the Diputación de Guadalajara has increased its financial support for the designation, raising the budget from €10,000 to €45,000 to aid in regional and national promotion.

Despite its anniversary, the DO faces challenges regarding production volume. Annual output has decreased from approximately six million liters in its early years to roughly 2.5 million liters currently. Enrique Segovia, president of DO Mondéjar, attributed this decline to the abandonment of farmland and a reduction in vineyard area. However, he noted that the organization is shifting its focus from quantity to quality.

As the smallest denomination of origin in Spain, DO Mondéjar aims to leverage its size to maintain a close link to the territory. Key objectives moving forward include ensuring generational renewal, protecting the viticultural landscape, and expanding the market recognition of Mondéjar wines both within and outside the province.
