DOCanarias premieres two documentaries in the Canary Islands

The Festival Internacional de Cine de Realidad de Canarias showcased two new documentaries under its DOCanarias program. "El mapa para tocarte" by Mercedes Afonso and "La Berma" by Agustín Domínguez were screened on 10 and 11 September at the Sala Timanfaya in Puerto de la Cruz. Both films carry the "Tercera Orilla" label, indicating they emerged from the festival’s labs and highlight the Canary Islands as a cultural crossroads.

Afonso’s film follows her twelve‑year documentation of her son Airam, who lives with autism spectrum disorder and PANDAS, exploring the meaning of motherhood. The documentary previously won the Biznaga de Plata for Best Documentary at the 29th Málaga Film Festival. Domínguez’s work tells the story of Sahrawi refugee Yauguiha Mohamed Embarec, who works on de‑mining the 2,720 km "wall of shame" that divides Western Sahara. The projects also participated in the CreaDoc laboratory run by Canary Islands Film in collaboration with DOCanarias, as explained by Natacha Mora Yanes, director of the government department supporting the audiovisual sector.
