Dockworkers in 22 countries strike to protest arms shipments

Dockworkers across 113 ports in 22 countries have launched coordinated strikes and protests to oppose the transport of arms and military equipment through civilian maritime facilities. The movement, which includes support from over 25 trade unions, is primarily motivated by solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and opposition to the militarization of commercial ports.

The industrial action is expected to impact major maritime hubs, including Hamburg, Valencia, Le Havre, Genoa, Piraeus, Tangier Med, and Nhava Sheva. Organizers suggest the disruption could affect more than 40 percent of cargo movement in the Mediterranean and impact freight valued at over $2 billion.

In Greece, the strike involves dockworkers, engineers, and seafarers, leading to expected disruptions in ferry services to the islands. In France, the CGT dockers union reported that approximately 95 percent of dockers would participate, with many terminals expected to halt operations for 24 hours. In Italy, the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) called for a 24-hour general strike involving demonstrations in more than 40 cities.
