Drum Tower Hospital trial shows stem cell therapy improves heart function
A clinical trial conducted at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital in China has demonstrated that stem cell therapy can significantly improve heart function in patients with severe heart failure. The study, published in Nature Medicine, involved 20 patients: 10 received injections of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes, while 10 served as a control group receiving coronary bypass surgery.
After 12 months of follow-up, nine out of the ten patients treated with the stem cell therapy showed marked improvement in cardiac function. These patients reported better responses to daily activities, reduced chest pressure, and decreased shortness of breath. Additionally, they showed improved performance in six-minute walk tests. Researchers noted that no tumors were developed by the patients during the 12-month observation period.
