Doctor sentenced to 11 years for false skin cancer diagnoses in Paraná

Carolina Fernandes Biscaia Carminatti, a doctor in Pato Branco, Paraná, has been sentenced in the first instance to 11 years and 8 months in a closed regime for issuing false skin cancer diagnoses. Investigations revealed that the doctor examined patients' moles and claimed they were potentially cancerous, subsequently presenting falsified laboratory reports to justify unnecessary surgical procedures.

The conviction includes charges of illegal practice of medicine, 21 counts of bodily injury, and 32 counts of fraud. Authorities estimate the financial damage to be approximately R$ 130.4 thousand, with at least 38 potential victims identified. Forensic evidence suggested that some documents were falsified within her own office using a photocopier.

While the sentence was handed down, the defense noted that the 98-page ruling partially accepted their arguments, resulting in acquittal for several crimes. The doctor remains free pending appeals, as the judge did not identify immediate requirements for pretrial detention. The defense intends to challenge the decision in the Paraná Court of Justice and higher courts.
