Doctor Who creators altered finale to avoid series cancellation appearance

Showrunner Russell T. Davies has revealed that the ending of Ncuti Gatwa’s tenure on ‘Doctor Who’ was altered during the editing process. The original plan involved a scene where the Doctor saves a child to ensure the survival of the universe, concluding with a golden glow effect as the Doctor spoke his final lines.

However, during montage, the production team realized the visual effect looked like the definitive end of the entire series rather than a regeneration. Fearing this would be too upsetting for younger viewers and would signal the death of the show, creators decided to introduce Billie Piper, known for her role as Rose Tyler, to ensure the conclusion felt like a transition rather than a finality.
