Catalan doctors begin indefinite strike over healthcare workload

Doctors in the Catalan public health system have launched an indefinite strike, organized by the Metges de Catalunya union. The protest seeks to address severe labor issues, including excessive workloads, the need for a specific collective agreement, and the elimination of 24-hour shifts. The union argues that the healthcare system is currently sustained only by the overexertion of professionals.

While emergency services, intensive care units (ICU), and vital treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy will maintain minimum services to ensure patient safety, other primary care services may be affected. The union has criticized the regional government for failing to provide adequate solutions to the shortage of medical professionals and the increasing pressure on staff.

Simultaneously, local tensions regarding healthcare access are rising. In the La Sagrera district, staff and users at the CAP La Sagrera clinic have protested against overcrowding caused by a population increase from 29,000 to 40,000 residents without a corresponding increase in staff. Meanwhile, in the Parc Taulí region, neighborhood associations have demanded audits and urgent measures to address long waiting lists, which in some cases exceed two years for specialist consultations.
