Doctors recommend fallopian tube removal to reduce ovarian cancer risk

Medical professionals are recommending opportunistic salpingectomy—the removal of fallopian tubes—as a preventative measure to reduce ovarian cancer risk by approximately 80 per cent. Because most ovarian cancers are believed to develop in the fallopian tubes, this procedure can serve as a highly effective safeguard.

The procedure typically takes less than five minutes and is performed on patients already undergoing abdominal surgery who have completed childbearing or do not wish to have children. Research from the University of British Columbia indicates that removing the tubes while leaving the ovaries intact preserves hormone production and results in minimal side effects.

Ovarian cancer is noted for its high mortality rate, with approximately 2,000 deaths annually in Canada alone. The disease is often difficult to detect in early stages due to a lack of observable symptoms or accurate early-detection tests, making preventative surgical options a significant area of focus for clinicians.
