Doctors remove fully formed tooth from 16-year-old's eye socket in India
Doctors in Madurai, India, have treated a 16-year-old boy with an extremely rare medical anomaly: a fully formed canine tooth growing within his left ophthalmic orbit. The patient sought medical attention at the Aravind Eye Hospital after experiencing swelling and noticing two hard, white protrusions near his eyelid.
CT scans confirmed the presence of the ectopic tooth, which developed outside the normal dental arch. Medical professionals noted that while ectopic teeth—teeth that grow in abnormal locations—are known to occur in areas like the nasal cavity, palate, or jaw, this is the first documented case of such a tooth appearing in the upper ophthalmic orbit globally.
The exact cause remains unidentified, though experts suggest it may stem from developmental issues during embryonic growth, where cell migration is disrupted, or potentially from hereditary factors.
