Doctors warn against dangerous bloodletting trend for stroke treatment
Medical professionals are warning against a dangerous social media trend involving bloodletting and cupping therapy as purported treatments for strokes. Videos circulating online claim these methods can ‘clear vessels,’ ‘remove toxins,’ or quickly restore consciousness in stroke patients.
Dr. Doan Du Manh, a member of the Vietnam Vascular Society, stated that these practices lack reliable clinical evidence and have no medical basis for treating strokes. He noted that while patients may report feeling ‘more comfortable’ after such procedures, this sensation does not mean the underlying brain damage from the stroke is being addressed.
Experts emphasize that a stroke is a critical medical emergency requiring immediate professional diagnosis and treatment. Delaying hospital care to attempt unverified methods like bloodletting can result in the loss of precious time. Furthermore, applying suction or strong pressure to the neck area poses significant risks to blood vessels.
