documenta 16 faces artist boycotts over Gaza war stance

The upcoming sixteenth edition of documenta, a major contemporary art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany, is facing political challenges as several artists have declined to participate. Naomi Beckett, the artistic director for the next edition and a senior curator at the Guggenheim Museum, revealed that the withdrawals are linked to the conflict in Gaza and the German government's stance on the war.

Beckett noted that some artists cited concerns regarding the lack of sufficient freedom of expression in Germany to display certain works, while others criticized the German government's position. The exhibition, which is scheduled to open in June 2027, aims to move past the controversies of the 2022 edition. The previous selection committee resigned entirely in 2023 amidst similar tensions.

Beckett stated that her priority is to find ways to overcome division and restore dialogue, emphasizing the importance of solidarity without adhering to rigid positions. Approximately 100 artists are expected to participate in the upcoming cycle.
