Documenta sixteen unveils new visual identity and website

The 16th edition of documenta (D16) has unveiled its new visual identity and website. Scheduled to take place in Kassel, Germany, from June 12 to September 19, 2027, the exhibition will be under the artistic direction of Naomi Beckwith.

The new design was developed through a collaboration between design studios Beautiful Baby Limited, Data Orbit, and Wiegand von Hartmann. The visual language utilizes three distinct typefaces, including ‘Degree Two Thousand Twenty Six’, a custom font inspired by the hand-drawn block typography of W. E. B. Du Bois.

D16 aims to foster transcultural dialogue and celebrate collective learning through music, performance, and improvisation. The exhibition also features the New Art School Modality (nasm), an initiative founded by artistic team member Romi Crawford to create alternative models for artistic research and teaching.

The unveiling follows a period of institutional recovery for documenta after previous political controversies. The new branding adopts a minimalist approach, focusing on essential information and a countdown to the event.
