Documentary Aitatxo highlights grief in fathers

The documentary “Aitatxo, isiltasuneko ahotsak,” based on an idea by Anakotz Lasarte, explores the often unrecognized trauma experienced by fathers following the loss of a child. The film, which has been screened in over 40 towns in the Basque Country, aims to validate the grief of men, noting that society frequently focuses on the mother's mourning while overlooking the father's emotional needs.

Lasarte, who co-created the project with her partner Izaskun after losing two children, describes the difficulty of navigating a society that does not always extend support to grieving fathers. The documentary seeks to provide a space for these silent voices to be heard, challenging the social tendency to view men as less vulnerable in the context of bereavement.
