Documentary ‘Aqui Não Entra Luz’ explores Brazilian domestic labor

The documentary ‘Aqui Não Entra Luz’, directed by Karoline Maia, is set to premiere on Canal Brasil on September 7. The film explores the historical and social realities of domestic workers in Brazil, examining the connections between the legacy of slavery and modern-day domestic labor, which remains predominantly performed by Black women.

Maia, the daughter of a domestic worker, uses her family experience to investigate how social and racial inequalities have persisted across generations. The documentary previously received awards for Best Direction and Best Feature Film at the 2025 Brasília Festival and was featured at the 49th São Paulo International Film Festival and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).
