Documentary examines billionaire influence on French media

The documentary “Ceux qui tiennent la laisse” (Those Who Hold the Leash), directed by Gilles Balbastre, explores the relationship between private fortunes, political leaders, and media institutions. The film investigates how ownership affects information and examines the trajectories of figures such as Xavier Niel and Patrick Drahi.

Produced in collaboration with Acrimed and Les Amis du Monde diplomatique, the project seeks to make visible the everyday connections between administrations, corporations, and economic power. The film distinguishes between the act of owning a newspaper, influencing its strategy through budgets and appointments, and the direct dictation of specific articles.
