Documentary explores Federico García Lorca’s final relationship
The documentary ‘La voz quebrada’, directed by Manuel Menchón, explores the relationship between the renowned poet Federico García Lorca and his last lover, Juan Ramírez de Lucas. The film utilizes previously private archives, including diaries, correspondence, and negatives, which were kept in a safe by de Lucas and only to be released after his death in 2010.
The story centers on the summer of 1936, when Lorca proposed that de Lucas accompany him on a trip to Mexico. However, because de Lucas was 19 and lacked parental permission to travel abroad, the plan was abandoned to avoid family conflict. The two parted ways at the Atocha station in Madrid, and they never saw each other again. Lorca was executed a month later following the coup that initiated the Spanish Civil War.
Director Menchón, who discovered the relationship while researching a previous project, describes the history of Federico and Juan as a metaphor for the silences within Spain. The documentary is scheduled for theatrical release on October 16.
