Documentary explores North Korean defector stories

In a recent episode of the documentary series ‘Kobieta na krańcu świata’, journalist Wojciechowska highlights the experiences of women who escaped North Korea. Due to the regime's strict control over foreign media and entry, the production focused on the testimonies of defectors rather than filming inside the country.

One featured individual, Eunju Kim, described witnessing public executions as a child and later fleeing the country with her family during a period of famine. Following their escape, Kim and her family were sold into slavery in China. Another defector, Gyuri, explained that her decision to flee was driven by the severe punishments imposed on those consuming South Korean media, noting that friends had been executed for watching K-pop or K-dramas.

Dr. Joanna Hosaniak noted that the North Korean regime utilizes forced labor camps to produce goods, such as textiles and artificial eyelashes, which are subsequently exported abroad.
