Documentary exposes Myanmar telecom fraud and human trafficking tactics

A documentary produced by China's Ministry of Public Security and CCTV, titled ‘Documentary on the Destruction of Northern Myanmar Telecom Fraud’, has revealed the mechanics of cross-border human trafficking and telecommunications fraud.

The film details the case of actor Wang Xing, who was lured to Thailand in early 2025 under the guise of filming a television series. After arriving in Bangkok, he was diverted toward the Thai-Myanmar border and subsequently trafficked into the Myawaddy region of Myanmar. During his captivity, he was sold to different criminal compounds three times within four days. Wang was eventually rescued through international law enforcement cooperation between China, Thailand, and Myanmar. The suspect responsible for the recruitment, identified as Yan Moulei, was arrested in Thailand.

Additionally, the documentary highlights technical efforts to combat fraud. Experts from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have been stationed at the Yunnan border to conduct ‘cyber warfare’ against fraud syndicates. These groups often operate in civilian buildings near the Chinese border, sometimes as close as 200 meters, and illegally hijack Chinese communication signals to impersonate domestic users. In a three-month operation, MIIT experts shut down 75,000 fraudulent mobile numbers and over 4,000 broadband accounts, effectively severing communication channels used by criminals.
