Documentary film follows Polarstern expedition to East Antarctica

The documentary filmSalz und Wasser – Mit der legendären Polarstern in die Antarktis’ follows a ten-week expedition to the East Antarctic ice sheet aboard the research vessel Polarstern. Directed by Ines Reinisch, the film documents the lives of 93 researchers and crew members as they study the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Scientists on the mission are investigating how global warming may shift this current southward, bringing warmer water to the East Antarctic coast. Researchers warn that if this region melts, global sea levels could rise by as much as 52 meters. The film captures the daily routines of the crew, geological excursions to an Australian research station, and the human experiences of participants, including Nazanin Asadi, the second Iranian scientist to reach Antarctica.
