Documentary ‘Não Existe Almoço Grátis’ to release in Brazil

The documentary ‘Não Existe Almoço Grátis’, directed by Marcos Nepomuceno and Pedro Charbel, is scheduled for release in Brazilian cinemas on September 3. The official trailer has been released by the distributor, Descoloniza Filmes.

The film explores the impact of hunger following the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting public policy gaps. It focuses on the ‘Cozinhas Solidárias’ (Solidarity Kitchens) organized by the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Teto (MTST) to distribute free meals across Brazil.

Set against the backdrop of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s inauguration, the narrative follows three Black women—Bizza, Jurailde, and Socorro—who lead a solidarity kitchen in Sol Nascente, a large favela near Brasília. The film uses their personal stories to critique neoliberalism and social inequality within the Distrito Federal.
