Documentary on Alfredo Stroessner dictatorship to screen in Misiones

The documentary “Bajo las banderas, el sol,” directed by Juanjo Pereira, will be screened at the IMAX del Conocimiento on Wednesday, November 11, at 20:00. The screening is part of the Mandioca cycle, organized by the Cineclub del Parque del Conocimiento and the Instituto de Artes Audiovisuales de Misiones (IAAviM).

Constructed entirely from archival material, the film examines the 35-year dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner in Paraguay, which lasted from 1954 to 1989. The production utilizes news broadcasts, television programs, propaganda films, and declassified documents recovered from Paraguay and other nations to explore the cult of personality surrounding the dictator and the international alliances that sustained his rule.

The film aims to reflect on how official propaganda helped maintain the regime and how these historical images contribute to collective memory. The Mandioca cycle specifically seeks to highlight audiovisual productions from the region or those involving professionals from Misiones.
