Documentary screenings focus on Selknam identity and mental health

The documentary ‘Vuelvo donde nunca estuve’, directed by Constanza Vásquez Palau and Andrés Morales Zambra, will be screened at the Universidad de Magallanes in Punta Arenas. The film follows Fernanda Olivares, a Selknam descendant and executive director of the Hach Saye Foundation, on a journey to Tierra del Fuego to explore her family history and the legacy of colonization. The project challenges narratives of extinction, noting that the Chilean state officially recognized the Selknam people in October 2023, and the 2024 Census recorded 1,392 individuals belonging to the community.

In Spain, the documentary short ‘Donde brotamos’, directed by Lucía Ortín, will return to Teatro España in Santa Eulària on October 7. The screening is part of World Mental Health Day observances and aims to foster discussion regarding mental health, disability, and inclusion. The film follows the daily life of Alberto González, focusing on his relationship with nature and his personal perspective without reducing his identity to a medical diagnosis.
