Documentary ‘Shumei’ wins Best Film at Venice International Film Festival

The documentary film ‘Shumei’ (Succession), directed by Takashi Miike, has won the Best Film award in the Cinema & Arts Award category at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. This marks a historic achievement as the first time a Japanese film has received this specific independent award.

The film chronicles the journey of Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro as he undergoes the prestigious ritual of succession to the 13th generation title, while also documenting the transition of traditions to his son, Ichikawa Shinosuke. The documentary captures both the public grandeur of Kabuki performances and the private, rigorous preparations involved in maintaining the lineage.

In a press conference, Ichikawa Danjuro expressed his gratitude to the staff and director Miike, noting that the award belongs to the team who persevered through the challenges of the pandemic. The festival jury praised the film for its meticulous camerawork and its ability to portray Kabuki as a ‘comprehensive art form’ that balances tradition with modern social significance.
