Documentation Center for Political Islam releases 2025 annual report

The Documentation Center for Political Islam has released its 2025 annual report, highlighting a shift in how Islamist ideology is disseminated. The report notes that the trend of conveying ideology has moved from traditional preachers to social media influencers. These actors target young people, particularly men seeking identity, by creating an ‘Islamist manosphere’ centered on self-coaching, self-optimization, and new concepts of masculinity.

Researchers identified concerns regarding the manipulation of freely available online content to influence AI-generated search summaries. There are also reports of researchers being labeled as Islamophobic and the term ‘political Islam’ being treated as a controversial concept.

The report also examines Europe as an arena for both state and non-state actors, including the Turkish religious authority, Hamas, and the Muslim Brotherhood. Regarding debates over bans, center director Lisa Fellhofer stated that such discussions are possible provided they are legally rigorous and respect fundamental rights, noting that the rule of law must maintain its boundaries.
