Dodecanese electrical interconnection project receives environmental approval

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has approved the environmental terms for a major electrical interconnection project for the Dodecanese islands. The project, with an estimated budget of approximately €2 billion, aims to end the electrical isolation of the islands by connecting them to the national mainland grid.

The plan, designed by ADMIE, will be implemented in two phases. It involves connecting Kos, Rhodes, and Karpathos to the mainland via Corinth. The primary link from Corinth to Kos will utilize a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system spanning 430 km, of which 420 km is subsea. Additionally, Kos will connect to Rhodes via three subsea HVAC cables totaling roughly 100 km, and Rhodes will connect to Karpathos through an 88 km subsea cable.

This infrastructure is expected to provide more reliable and cost-effective power while facilitating the use of renewable energy sources. It will also allow for the gradual phase-out of diesel-powered generating stations located near residential and tourist areas, thereby reducing environmental impacts. Tenders are already underway for cables, equipment, and conversion stations.
