Dodgers linked to signing Japanese prospect Shoki Oda
The Los Angeles Dodgers have emerged as a leading candidate to sign high school pitcher Shoki Oda, according to reports from the California Post. Although Oda was selected as the first-round pick by the Yomiuri Giants in the recent NPB draft, he has expressed a desire to pursue a career in Major League Baseball.
Scouts estimate that Oda could receive a signing bonus between $3 million and $5 million (approximately 470 million to 780 million yen). This represents a significant financial disparity compared to the NPB, where the effective cap for first-round draft picks is approximately 100 million yen.
Oda, an 18-year-old standout from Yokohama High School, is noted for his velocity and command. While he has not yet made a final decision, reports indicate he has completed the necessary registration procedures with the MLB Commissioner’s Office to facilitate an international amateur contract. His final path will likely be determined following upcoming meetings with various MLB clubs.
