Dodgers pitcher Edwin Díaz denies illegal cockfighting links

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edwin Díaz publicly rejected reports that he participated in illegal cockfighting in Puerto Rico. He said he “didn’t do anything illegal,” added that Major League Baseball has not contacted him, and emphasized that the activity is legal under Puerto Rican law despite a 2019 federal ban.

Díaz, who signed a three‑year, $69 million contract with the Dodgers in December, has been recovering from elbow surgery to remove a loose body performed in April. He threw to live batters for the first time in a practice session and said he feels ready to begin a minor‑league rehabilitation assignment, with a return to the major‑league roster expected after the All‑Star break.

The controversy stems from social‑media posts and a USA Today story linking Díaz to cockfighting events. While the federal ban carries penalties of up to five years in prison and $250,000 fines, Díaz maintains his involvement is cultural and lawful in Puerto Rico.
