DOE Genesis Mission awards to ORNL, UC, Delaware, and Miami research teams
The U.S. Department of Energy announced the first round of Genesis Mission awards on July 22, funding 278 projects nationwide. The initiative seeks to accelerate breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery and national security by integrating artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum systems and advanced scientific instruments.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory will lead nine projects and contribute to an additional 32 projects, and it also provides the American Science Cloud that links the DOE computing networks of all 17 national laboratories.
The University of California investigators are responsible for 40 projects – 15 % of the total – across seven UC campuses and three affiliated national laboratories, addressing challenges such as nuclear energy, critical mineral extraction, chip design and commercial fusion.
The University of Delaware was selected for Phase I of the program to develop an AI‑driven framework for composite manufacturing in partnership with GE Vernova, targeting improved predictive capability and defect detection in fiber‑reinforced polymer parts.
The University of Miami team will develop an AI‑assisted, acid‑free magnetic process to recover rare‑earth elements (neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium) from low‑grade domestic ores and end‑of‑life products, aiming to create a domestic supply chain for critical materials.
