Dog Aging Project finds shared biological aging patterns with humans
Research from the Dog Aging Project suggests that dogs and humans may share similar biological patterns related to the aging process. A study published in ‘The Journals of Gerontology’ examined metabolites—small chemical compounds and molecules produced during normal bodily processes—to identify links to lifespan.
Researchers found that specific combinations of these metabolites are associated with earlier or later death in dogs in a manner that closely resembles patterns previously observed in humans. Dr. Kate Krivi, lead veterinarian for the project and a professor at Texas A&M University, noted that the molecules representing risks or protections against premature death are remarkably similar between the two species.
The study utilized blood samples from dogs participating in the Dog Aging Project, a citizen science initiative where owners provide detailed data and physical samples. These findings highlight the potential of using dogs as models for studying long-term health and the biological markers of aging.
