Dog Aging Project studies 55,000 canines to advance longevity research
Scientists in the United States have launched the Dog Aging Project, a large-scale scientific study involving at least 55,000 dogs. Supported by the National Institute on Aging, the research aims to investigate how the complex interplay of genetics, lifestyle, and environment influences the aging process in canines.
As detailed in a recent article published in the journal Nature, researchers believe that studying companion dogs can provide critical insights into human aging mechanisms. Unlike traditional laboratory models such as mice or fruit flies, dogs share similar functional declines, diseases, and human-like healthcare environments. Because dogs age more rapidly than humans, they offer a unique opportunity for longitudinal studies and interventions that may eventually be translated into human health applications.
