Dog attacks on sheep in Barrocas, Brazil kill four and injure twelve

In the rural area of Barrocas, Brazil, a pack of dogs entered a sheep pen in the village of Cedro early on Saturday, 25 July. Four sheep were killed and twelve more suffered injuries after the dogs escaped through a hole beneath the wooden fence.

Following a series of similar incidents at the same property, the state Secretary of Agriculture, Robenildo Brito, announced a public hearing to be held on 19 August at the municipal council. The meeting will bring together livestock producers and authorities to discuss preventive measures, including the use of guardian dogs such as the Pastor Maremmano, a canil (kennel), and animal castration programs.

Local farmers have expressed concern that repeated attacks threaten the viability of sheep‑raising in the region and have called for stronger enforcement against owners of aggressive dogs.
