Dog behavior and breed selection insights from experts

Experts provide insights into understanding canine behavior and selecting appropriate dog breeds based on lifestyle and temperament.

Dog trainer Casey Ray advises that certain breeds require high levels of experience, consistency, and energy. She identifies the Akita, known for its independent nature, and the Australian Kelpie, described as an ‘energy bomb’ due to its high activity needs, as breeds that may be challenging for some owners. The Border Collie is also noted for its extreme intelligence and work drive, which can lead to behavioral issues if the animal is not provided with sufficient mental and physical stimulation.

Regarding emotional expression, experts note that dogs use specific behaviors to signal affection and security. A phenomenon referred to as ‘mlem’—where a dog licks its nose or mouth while drowsy—is cited as a sign that a dog feels safe and loved. Other indicators of canine attachment include relaxed eye contact, tail wagging, leaning against owners, and enthusiastic greetings.
