Dog behavior and well-being: exercise needs and grief
Veterinary experts note that appropriate exercise duration for dogs varies significantly based on breed, age, health status, and physical fitness. Working breeds, such as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds, require more physical and mental stimulation compared to companion breeds like Yorkshire Terriers. Owners of brachycephalic breeds, such as Pugs and Boxers, must exercise extra caution during heat to prevent overheating due to respiratory characteristics.
Research involving 160 dogs indicates that canine companions can experience behavioral changes following the loss of a fellow animal. Approximately 60 percent of dogs were observed visiting locations previously shared with a deceased companion. Other observed changes include increased attachment to owners, social withdrawal, decreased interest in activities, and alterations in eating and sleeping patterns, with roughly one-third of dogs showing a temporary loss of appetite.
