Dog behavior experts share insights on communication and training

Experts and researchers are providing insights into canine behavior and communication to help owners better understand their pets.

Behaviorist Víctor Mareño advises owners against reacting too enthusiastically when a dog greets them at the door. Providing immediate attention, such as petting or playing, when a dog is jumping or barking can reinforce undesirable habits. Instead, owners should wait for the animal to calm down or use commands like ‘sit’ before offering rewards to ensure the dog learns that calm behavior earns attention.

Additionally, research from the University of Trento indicates that a wagging tail does not always signify joy; it can also indicate tension, uncertainty, or fear. Scientists observed that dogs tend to wag their tails more toward the right side of their body in positive situations, while movements toward the left are more common during stressful or uncertain encounters. This asymmetry is believed to be linked to the different roles of the brain's hemispheres in managing approach and withdrawal behaviors.
